Lot 1362		1798. Large eagle, small 8. BD-6, Rarity 6. NGC graded AU-58. A nice frosty coin which shows scarcely any signs of wear and a solid strike on all but the uppermost central devices. The surfaces show a few minor signs of handling, as expected on any of these rare early half eagles. There are some minor adjustment marks on the central obverse and these are as made at the mint. When the gold bars were cast and drawn and rolled at the Mint, the planchets were often rolled slightly heavy, and then "adjusted" by filing off the excess gold. Each planchet was carefully weighed by hand and by law had to be within a narrow weight tolerance. This particular die pairing is quite scarce with only 30 to 40 pieces known today, this is likely one of the finer examples to survive. Both the obverse and reverse dies soon developed heavy die cracks and were replaced imparting the rarity to this die pairing, as was common during this era. Thus a variety collection of these prized rarities is quite the numismatic challenge. A handsome coin with strong eye appeal and attractive surfaces and color. Only 24,867 struck. Lot 1363		1800 Blunt 1, BD-2, Rarity 3+. NGC graded MS-63. A high grade example of this rarified type with precious few surviving at all, and especially so in Choice mint condition. This one has glorious coppery gold hints over lustrous fields and devices. Liberty's cheek and neck are wonderfully clean and free of all but a few tiny marks. The reverse too is mint fresh and boldly struck, with fine details imparted by the dies on each of the eagle's feathers, the stars and lettering too. A simply fantastic coin that offers historic appeal, conditionally challenging quality and rich golden toning. A nice looking example. Only 37,628 struck. Pop 15; 10 finer at NGC. Lot 1364		1802, 2 over 1. BD-1, Rarity 4+. NGC graded AU-58+. This is the "Centered Overdate" as defined by John Dannreuther who wrote the book on this series of early gold die varieties. The surfaces have a few shallow nicks and marks, but he luster is mostly intact and the strike is solid and sharp. There is only a bit of wear on the high points of the design, and a well preserved and attractive coin that will satisfy any specialist seeking an example. Untoned and well struck with reflective fields. Lots of mint luster evident. Lot 1365		1803, 3 over 2. BD-3, Rarity 4. PCGS graded EF-45. Boldly struck and lightly toned. Darker toning on the reverse with some moderate dark planchet streaks from improper rolling of the gold metal. These are a natural part of the planchet preparation process. Lot 1366		1804. Normal 8, Small 4. BD-1, Rarity 4+. PCGS graded AU-53. A well struck coin that offers bold definition on all the devices, rich orange gold color and a lot of eye appeal. The surfaces are clean and attractive. This is a later die state with a full rim cud (a piece of the die chipped away from the edge) down to the top of the T in UNITED. A wonderfully original coin! Lot 1367		1804. Small 8, BD-2, Rarity 4+. PCGS graded EF-45. Nicely toned with classic orange gold hues throughout. The surfaces are sweet, no adjustment marks or handling issues, just limited smooth wear. The reverse die was previously used to strike half eagles in 1803 prior to striking this coin. Lot 1369		1806. Round 6, 7X6 Stars, BD-6, Rarity 2. NGC graded MS-61. Here is a fine mint state example of this sought after type coin. The surfaces are pleasing as close examination finds little more than a stray nick or two, and the luster is flashy. Rather well struck for this early gold coin, with full curls on Liberty and all the definition on the eagle too. Its relevant to recall that Thomas Jefferson was well into his second term as President when this coin was struck, which brings a fresh perspective to this intriguing coin. Frosty and untoned. Lot 1370		1806. Round 6, 7X6 Stars. BD-6, Rarity 2. PCGS graded AU-53. Lovely copper and golden toning on both sides. Although this a fairly plentiful variety its still scarce with the estimated number known to be between 600 and 900 pieces. Notice the residual luster in the protected areas and the sharp strike. There are some light adjustment marks on the reverse which run roughly horizontal. A solid example of this elusive early Capped Bust $5 coin. Lot 1371		1808 Normal 5 D. BD-3, Rarity 4+. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck with rich golden toning. The surfaces are clean and fresh, with the luster undisturbed and we note a couple of minor copper streaks on the reverse, a natural part of the copper based alloy used to strengthen the gold planchet. Sometimes the copper alloy makes itself known with these minor dark spots. Minor die clashing is present in the fields, and a handsome and attractive coin in every way. Housed in an Old Style Holder. Lot 1374		1810. Large date, large 5. BD-4, Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck by the dies and with light golden toning. Quite lustrous and choice, with vibrant mint color that includes a hint of greenish gold and bright yellow. The surfaces are sweet, with no discernable distractions, and strong visual appeal for an early gold coin. It is hard to imagine how this coin survived all these 210 years in choice condition. Lot 1375		1810. Large date, large 5. BD-4, Rarity 2. PCGS graded AU-55. Well struck with full separation on all of Liberty's curls as well as the eagle's feathers. Struck in bright yellow gold with no signs of toning. There is only a hint of wear on the uppermost devices here. Full mint luster in the protected areas and the surfaces show minimal signs of circulation. For identification there is a minor scuff behind the eagle's head in the field. The Capped Bust half eagle design was created by Mint Engraver John Reich in 1807 upon his arrival at the Philadelphia Mint. The design was quite popular at the time and this continues with collectors to this very day. Lot 1376		1811. Tall 5. BD-1, High Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-64. Boldly struck with fully defined curls cascading down Liberty's neck onto her shoulders. The devices and fields are captivating as there are no deep or detracting handling marks on the surfaces. The color is pleasing coppery gold with strong luster in the fields. This particular coin is one of the finest known of the Tall 5 variety and is currently tied with the best certified. Lot 1384		1873. Closed 3. NGC graded MS-66. A well struck gem that offers regal satin mint frost over all of Liberty's face and neck, undisturbed by handling or friction. Lightly toned in the reflective fields. A great looking coin that is so wonderfully preserved, especially so for an early half eagle struck soon after the end of the Civil War. An extraordinary condition rarity at this lofty grade level. The Closed 3 refers to the 3 in the date, where the knobs on the upper and lower loops nearly touch, and at a glance appear to be an 8. After the usual dies were prepared and coinage began in 1873, it was noticed that the 3 did appear to be an 8, so new dies were ordered with a more open appearance to the 3. Thus most 1873 coinage comes with with the Closed 3 and Open 3 date punches. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Lot 1387		1903. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. CAC. PQ. A flashy cameo proof with lovely rich golden toning and a splash of vibrant sunshine gold in the left obverse field. Liberty's face and neck and exceptionally clean and free of marks. The strike is bold and precise as expected for the proof gold coin. The preservation is where this one really shines, with no signs of handling or abuse, and a perfect sparkling jewel to represent the Coronet or Liberty gold series. Rarely are these found so original and with CAC approval at this lofty grade, so don't miss out if you have been seeking a really high end gem proof of this series. A numismatic delight! Lot 1388		1904. NGC graded Proof 67+ Cameo. A blazing untoned superb gem. Near perfect quality to the surfaces with no signs of handling on the devices or within the fields. Exceptional quality like this is rarely seen, especially so when combined with the desired Cameo contrast. The Liberty or Coronet half eagle had been first struck in 1839, and remained basically unchanged save for the adoption of the Motto on the reverse in 1866, through the end of this series in 1908.
